The Fire and the Spider

Many, many years ago when the earth was still cold and dark, animals, birds and insects could still communicate but there was no fire. The Indians needed fire to stay warm and to cook with.

At this time, however there was a race of giants who had fire and were called The Fire People. All the animals got together and decided that they should get some fire from the Fire People. The bear went first since he was the strongest. He came back and told the other animals that he had indeed tried his best, but that he had been unable to get any fire. Just then, the animals heard a tiny voice,

"Let me try," said the spider. They laughed and said, "You're too small."

But as each animal tried and returned with the sad news that they had failed, the spider's small voice was still heard saying, "Let me try". Finally she was the only one left, so they agreed to let her try. Spider fashioned a small clay pot with a lid on it and put it on her back as she started toward the fire. As she approached the fire, it began to grow light. When she finally reached the fire, she put a small ember into the clay pot.

Immediately the fire was missed by the Fire People. They looked all over for the missing fire. The spider would run a little ways and stop until she got right to the water's edge. The Fire People were almost on top of her, but they were afraid of the water, because they new it would put them out. Spider slipped into the water, so the Fire People figured that the fire she had stolen had been put out. So they went away thinking that their fire was safe. What they didn't know was that the ember had baked the clay pot to be water proof. So when the Fire People left, the spider came out of the water and brought the fire to the Indians. This is the Sacred Fire of the Cherokees.

New Year and on to New Things

Thank you everyone for all the cards and prayers sent over this holiday season.   I don't celebrate them much but it was nice to be thought of  whilst we make our way through the end of another year. 

I haven't blogged much, due to the fact that we are  not travelling this winter.  I try to post encouraging articles ever so often, to let you all know that I am thinking about each and Every one of you.  I have several New things in the works for this year.  First of which is my online shop, which I am happy to say is doing well.

Recently I have been designing and beading brick stitch picture earrings.  I am trying to make a couple of the same pattern in different color schemes to fatten up the store inventory.  As I am listing them in the online shop, I name the different color schemes and designs, so I can keep track of them.  My good friend Tarponjuli was so honored that I named the Lizard pattern after her, that she purchased the first one!  Thanks so much Juli, it means a lot to me.  So, above is pictured the next pair I made of the Lizard Tarponjuli earrings, and after putting the loop for the ear hook I realized it was upside down.  So I cut the thread tied it off and started another thread to re-do the ear hook loop of beads.  Then as I am finishing the last knot, I notice that I did the same exact thing!!! It was still upside down!!  LOL  Ok, so do I just keep it that way?  Or try for a third time to put the loop where I want it to be?!?

I have been hard at work on the web sites, there are updates beginning on the NEW 2011 pow wow page.  There is another section of my website that is a feed from a pow wow listing site.  PowWowTime.com started out listing pow wows in the Western half of the United States, and they are expanding to listing the entire country.

Ramona Moore Big Eagle ~ Legend Keeper

Miss Ramona was telling stories at the Bland Virginia pow wow and we were fortunate to meet and spend some time with her.  I would like to post the Bio and contact information for anyone who might be interested in what she has to offer.  She is a very Energetic, Fun, and Educating person. 

Ramona Moore Big Eagle, M. Ed. (Tuscarora/Cherokee) is an Oral Historian and Legend Keeper of the Tuscarora Nation of North Carolina.  An Enrolled member of the Nation, She earned a Master of Education Degree from East Tennessee State University in Reading and Storytelling and a Bachelor of Art Degree in Psychology from Catawba College.  As the Director of Heritage School, Ramona taught students for over ten years.  Ramona travels throughout the United States and Canada as a Motivational Speaker, Cultural Educator, Consultant, Workshop Facilitator and Storyteller.  Her workshops and programs of American Indian culture and history delivered through the art of Storytelling, authentic artifacts, music, drumming, dance, and crafts have been educating and empowering audiences of all ages since 1976.

In addition, Ramona does many corporate workshops on Leadership through Storytelling, Finding your Corporate Story, Team Building and Motivation.  Ramona is the CEO and president of Dare to Soar Enterprises, founder and president of the Storytellers Guild of Charlotte, Inc., a member of the National Storytelling Network, and the NC and SC Storytelling Guilds.  A winner of numerous awards and recognition as a professional Speaker and Storyteller, Ramona has been a featured speaker at various Literacy and Association Conferences, school libraries, corporate meetings, museums, historical sites, Red Ribbon Week, festivals, churches, and camps.  Ramona also teaches at University of Phoenix and was honored as Teacher of the Year in Drama for 2001-2002 at Community School of the Arts.

Psalm 23 ~ Explained

I got this in an email some time ago.  Today the Great Spirit brought me to this Psalm, so I am posting it.  I was working on a loom piece and thought that I may run out of thread before the pattern was finished, but I looked up and said, "I have Faith that I will be able to finish"  and I did.  I am Not Preaching, I only Praise His name every chance I get. 

This will most likely be that Last public blog that I post.  Anyone who wants to follow Six Directions Traders & Our Travels, will have to sign up for multiply and I will have to accept you.  This means it will not post to Facebook either.  It's just been a day to day fight for survival and time only allows a certain amount of Freedom.

Goodbye Indian Mounds, Hello Sam’s Club

A 1,500 year old Native American stone mound is being continually bulldozed near Oxford, Alabama, and the earth used as fill dirt for a Sam's Club, the BIG BOX discount franchise owned by Walmart.

Protesters there have managed to stop the shovels on the top of the mound, but excavation continues at the base and 320 acres of Sacred burial grounds, temples and sanctuaries are at risk. The Mayor of Oxford in his 7th consecutive term, plans to level the top of the mound and build a hotel, spa and resort. City council members completely disregard the research of reputable archaeologist that this site is not only of cultural and historical importance, but most likely contains the remains of deceased ancestors as well as cultural and spiritual artifacts.

If this sickens you and violates your sense of justice as it does ours, Join us both virtually via facebook and twitter for Globally coordinated VP (virtual protests) as well as on site "LIVE" for those of you who can be there in person. This is a fight that we can win if we look at the bigger picture to preserve this and other sites that are at risk. We may very well lose this battle but we need to raise international awareness of this brutal disregard of our collective native heritage and it's continued desecration. If we don't succeed in saving this site, we must set our sites on preventing further abuses and to make this an example of rampant greed and disregard of Native Cultural heritage.

Greetings,

Grandfather blessed us with a much needed surprise, which will be very helpful in our travels this summer.  We are very Thankful for all that we have, and all that we do not.  It doesn't matter how many times I see for myself, but each time it humbles me and Strengthens my Faith.

God and the Spider

During World War II, a US Paiute marine was separated from his unit on a Pacific island. The fighting had been intense, and in the smoke and the crossfire he had lost touch with his comrades.

Alone in the jungle, he could hear enemy soldiers coming in his direction.  Scrambling for cover, he found his way up a high ridge to several small caves in the rock. Quickly he crawled inside one of the caves. Although safe for the moment, he realized that once the enemy soldiers looking for him swept up the ridge, they would quickly search all the caves and he would be killed.

As he waited, he prayed, "Creator, if it be your will, please protect me.  Whatever your will though, I love you and trust you."

After praying, he lay quietly listening to the enemy begin to draw close.  He thought, "Well, I guess the Lord isn't going to help me out of this one." Then he saw a spider begin to build a web over the front of his cave.

As he watched, listening to the enemy searching for him all the while, the spider layered strand after strand of web across the opening of the cave.

"Hah, he thought. "What I need is a brick wall and what the Lord has sent me is a spider web. God does have a sense of humor."

As the enemy drew closer he watched from the darkness of his hideout and could see them searching one cave after another. As they came to his, he got ready to make his last stand. To his amazement, however, after glancing in the direction of his cave, they moved on. Suddenly, he realized that with the spider web over the entrance, his cave looked as if no one had entered for quite a while.

 

"Creator, forgive me," prayed the young Paiute Indian. "I had forgotten that in you a spider's web is stronger than a brick wall."

We all face times of great trouble. When we do, it is so easy to forget the victories that God would work in our lives, sometimes in the most surprising ways. We must be reminded  that in the Creator of All Things we will have success!"

And remember: Whatever is happening in your life, in the Great Mystery, a mere spider's web becomes a brick wall of protection.

The Story of the Native American 12 Days of Christmas

Gather round children and let us teach you a song that helps us to remember the sacred things of our Grandfather and the reasons that he came to walk our Land, clothed in Red Dirt.

We are excited to learn the things he accomplished for us, among us, and through us.

We are most excited that all the ways we have walked before now pointed us to this moment, when we mere humans would be able to walk as sons and daughters of the Most Holy One.

(Remember children, the eagle climbs the highest and takes our prayers to the High places, and the Eagle is Jesus, the One who was able also to climb to the heaven lies once and for all, to take our prayers, He is the Intercessor for all men).

(Remember children that the Owls represent both death and sacred messages from the Holy places… and in this song they represent the Old Testament and the new laws that brought death and mercy that brought life and Spiritual wisdom).

(For the drums beat out the sound of our Mother Earth while we pray to the Grandfather.. So as you hear them beat, Remember we now know that there is faith, hope and love in The Father, Son and the Holy Spirit).

(For the feathers remind us that Matthew, Mark, Luke and John were given the talking feather by the Grandfather himself, to tell His story to us all).

(For we must remember that the law did not vanish and though we live by grace, there is a law to be followed and we humbly submit to that law, in offering our prayers to the Holy One).

(For we celebrate the creation of our Mother Earth, and thank Him for giving us all life, through our prayers, often using the feathers of this creature to smudge ourselves in preparation of that prayer time).

(For we must remember the gifts of the Spirit are seven fold, and we learn how to walk in these gifts through our fear and awe of our God, we do this praying in our lodges).

(For we want to remember the beatitudes, the blessings Jesus promised to come to his people, The buffalo represent his provision for our health, our very existence, as did the blessings He invoked on the people, the meek, those who weep, the poor all people have provision in Him).

(For as we sit at the feet of our elders we hear how we can walk in the fruits of the Holy Spirit, they have always taught these truths, we just didn't know that they were the same truths taught by the Talking Leaves the white men brought to us).

(For our eagle dancers danced for the people, to protect the people, to keep the people in wholeness, and wellness.. As the Ten Commandments, were also set to keep the people whole, to protect them from their own evil thoughts).

(For as we send the smell of sweet grass to the heavens, it invites those of the realm of the Grandfather, to enter into our world to help us… in this we remember the faithful eleven who stood ready to help our Savior, ready to do his will and work, so it is with those we invite to help us, if sent By Jesus).

(For the drums he Gave on the third day can not help us to pray if they do not have four drummers each to beat out the heartbeat of the earth and its people to our God and when natives are on the drum, we call it Singing, because it is much more than just drumming

We are in Cherokee this weekend and having a wonderful time.  We went to the Festival of Native Peoples and it wasn't quite as good as last year.  The Apache Crown dancers and the Alaskan dancers were not there this time .  The best part, however, was seeing Alan Mose Jr. !  We also got to see many other friends such as Tommy Wildcat, Miss Lola, Rex Begae and Eddy Two Clouds.  We got to visit with Mama Elsie of the Wolf Clan and everyone went out to dinner together after the festival.  We are going to visit Bearmeats today, I think they are one of the best shops in Cherokee, they are located out on Soco road (19) on the east side of town heading towards Maggie Valley.  If you ever get out that way, you gotta stop in and see their wonderful shop! 

Next we are heading to Bland, Virginia and then Farmville, Virginia.  Looking forward to seeing some friends there.  Hope all is well.

I have been out at the preserve camping, cleaning the trailer up and making more stock. We have 4 pow wows within 5 weeks coming up. Above pictured is a Hawk that allowed me to photo him out in the pine barrens on the preserve.

I am closing the eBay shop to save on the fees and to concentrate on the dot com. It is Bitter Sweet, I am sad to see it go - I have had the shop opened since 2004, but my seller account is from 2002 and I will still keep that and run auctions occasionally when we are not on the road. However, the fees are really getting high, and I don't have the time to work on it to make it prosper at the moment.
